There's also a less expensive SmartThings Hub Dongle that can support Z-Wave and Zigbee, with Thread support coming soon.
Once you've got your smart fridge, smartphone and hub connected, it's really easy to use. The SmartThings app lets you control your fridge from anywhere with notifications sent to your phone when it's opened or closed. You can create schedules as well as set the temperature and even create reminders.
SmartThings is a founding member of the Home Connectivity Alliance, which is working to make major appliances in the home from a variety of manufacturers compatible. That could mean you'll be able to control your Samsung washer and dryer, Electrolux oven and LG television from the same app in the near future.
While it's not as widely supported as Alexa and Google Assistant, SmartThings does have some big names on its list, including Arlo, Nest, Belkin and Lifx. Samsung's fridge is a few years old and, although it still offers a wide range of functions but its touchscreen features aren't something that most people would consider essential. They're more of a fun and somewhat frivolous feature than anything else.
This could change as more software updates are released, but for now these models are ideally for those who need the most comprehensive connected fridge that is possible. You can save money by buying a model that does not include the Family Hub if you're not one of those people. If you have a lot of smart home devices that you need to manage from a single screen, or you like the idea of having a refrigerator with a giant touchscreen, it might be worth the investment.
